NEW WEST DOC FEST Aims to Educate and Inspire to Effect Great Change in Our Society

Two non-profit groups, the Green Ideas Network (GIN) and New Westminster Environmental Partners (NWEP), are pleased to present “The New West Doc Fest”. This exciting inaugural event for New Westminster is scheduled to take place at Douglas College on October 21 & 22, 2011. With substantial support from Douglas College, businesses, individuals, groups, and the community at large, the organizers were thrilled to get the green light to bring this unique initiative to the forefront this fall and hopefully make it an annual event.

Leading up to the event, a Burger/Beer/Silent Auction Fundraiser will be held on Wed., September 28, 2011 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. at the Heritage Grill, 447 Columbia Street, New Westminster. Everyone is invited to help support this inaugural event. Tickets are only $20 each for your choice of burger (4 kinds) a cold beer or glass of wine, silent auction and live music. Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.newwestdocfest.ca or by contacting Joyce at 604-522-9172.

At the festival, theatre-goers can enjoy to a wide range of intriguing award-winning documentaries which focus on environmental and social justice issues relevant to current events here at home, nationally or globally. Recognizing the importance of promoting solutions to the problems, the organizers encourage everyone to attend and learn about how individuals and communities can work together to effect great change in our society. This event will be carbon neutral in keeping with their sustainable communities’ mandate.

The New West Doc Fest opens with a reception on Friday night complete with live entertainment, cake and a feature film. Note that seating is limited for Friday’s event. The festival continues on Saturday in the main theatre from 12:00 noon until 9:30 p.m., which includes a benefit screening for cystic fibrosis. “65 Red Roses” will be screened in honour of New Westminster’s Eva Markvoort and her legacy.

Offering value to the experience, the festival showcases educational displays, and boasts notable panellists that will appear at each screening...film makers, elected officials, local and national organizations, and experts from the scientific community. In addition, there will be some fun surprises in the mix and an opportunity to see and vote for a fan favourite short presented by student filmmakers from Pull Focus, a local non-profit film school.
