Environmental Film Festival - April 21-23, 2009

and Student Video Contest
April 21 & April 23 2009

Green Ideas Network is pleased to host Surrey’s 3rd Annual Environmental Film Festival during the Environmental Extravaganza. There is a Video Contest ( see details here) for students again this year.

Venues: Earl Marriott Secondary School, 15751 16 Avenue, Surrey, Wheelhouse Theatre and Commons and Simon Fraser University, Surrey Campus, 13450 102 Avenue, Surrey Theatre 2600.

Time: 7:00-9:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Featuring:  free screenings of contest winners, award-winning films, post-film discussions, light refreshments, door prizes, raffles and displays.

Films begin at 7 pm.

Earl Marriott Secondary

Energy Crossroads (55 min) This award-winning documentary exposes the problems associated with our energy consumption. The film shows that the use of renewable energy such as solar and wind power, coupled with higher efficiency and conservation, will be key factors in preserving our quality of life and paving the way to a sustainable future for our children. It shows how everyone can be part of the solution!

The Big Ask (4 min) A poignant and moving short film made by Friends of the Earth in Belgium to help spread the message that we must ‘Act Now’ against climate change.

Kilowatt Ours (25 min) Kilowatt Ours is an inspirational film that demonstrates how easy it is to conserve energy. It reveals the connection between personal choices and energy use, introducing us to individuals, businesses, and schools who have cut their energy use in half. It will teach you how to dramatically reduce your own energy bill and improve the environment at the same time.

Farming the Seas (55 min) Aquaculture was intended to take the pressure off ocean fish stocks and help avert global food shortage, but many experts now believe that some forms of “fish farming” are actually creating more problems than they’re solving. This film journeys around world documenting the most important stories as they unfold.

Call from the Coast (27 min) is a captivating documentary that takes a critical look at salmon farming and its impacts on BC aboriginals, fishing, ecotourism and wildlife with stunning footage of BC’s west coast and marine environment.
